Fire a gun at a firing range
Sports & Adventure: Adrenaline

Why do you want to do this?

Although it doesn't seem a likely life list goal, I think I would like to learn how to shoot a gun so that if ever, for some strange reason, I was put into a situation where I needed to use it, I would know how.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Seriously, this is a great goal! I grew up in New Brunswick and had occasion to fire guns and it is one of those things I believe everyone should experience. I never embraced hunting but it gave me perspective on the ease at which one can end a life, with the pull of a finger. This may be one of those experiences you go in thinking one thing and you come out learning another lesson. I know I did!!

I never fired a gun until I was I think 14 years old. It was fun to fire at targets that we had set up around my uncle's campsite. I haven't really wanted to fire one since. But it is one hell of an experience your first time around.

Check out local shooting ranges. Usually they will have classes that cater to first timers Like Mr. Starr there, I never was fond of the idea of hunting, but firing a gun is an experience that you simply cannot explain. It's an invigorating experience that you will be glad you followed through with!

I learned how to shoot because my son was fascinated by guns so we joined a club and I was told that if any one person in the house was going to use guns, everyone needed to know how to handle them.

I was a little hesitant but loved it!  I like small arms best so that is a little more difficult to do but do go for it.

I felt the same way you did.  In crazy times like these, you just never know.  So I went to a local firing range that's open to the public.  It was a little scary at first.   There were guns that I can't believe they let people walk in and shoot with (why, hello belt fed machine gun).  I was terrified I was going to accidently shoot myself, my friend, and/or everyone else on the range!  Started with a 9mm Glock.  Once my friend taught me how to load it and hold it, and remove the safety, I was off!  I have to tell you, what an amazing feeling.  A huge rush.  Do it.
