Teach my son how to read
Personal Development & Community: Charity

Why do you want to do this?

Because I want my son to learn to love books and inspire his imagination.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

Books. ;-)

Time with my son and patience.

Learn the best method to teach reading.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Not sure. I have to think on this one.

I was very proud of my son this week. When we leave for school, he'll often grab a toy to take with him, but this time he grabbed a BOOK. It was a book about a dragon named Herb. I just bought it for him recently. I had debated on getting it, as it was hard cover and a little pricey. But it has such great illustrations, I just knew he would love it, so I took a chance.

Anyway, I was so proud he wanted to bring his special book along. I think my real goal, even above teaching him to read, is really teaching him to love books. So I think we are off to a great start.

This is an awesome goal. My daughter loves to read and I swear it's because I read to her every day from basically the day she was born. Introduce your son to the library -- it's our favorite quiet place to go, and all the books are free for the taking. I remember a summer afternoon when I hauled 10 books home for the week because she couldn't decide which ones to leave behind. Reading is an incredible gift from parent to child -- I really admire this one and want some video for when he learns to read independently! Please keep us updated on your progress. Good work!

Thanks Shea.... We are making a habit of regular library visits. It's so satisfying when we find a book he really likes. Our last trip yielded his new fave, "Horton Hatches the Egg."
