Research and write a family tree history
Relationships: Family

Why do you want to do this?

I once did a school project when my grandparents were all still alive, tracing our family history back five generations through paper trail and interviews. I got an A++ on the finished work for school but I lost it when we moved. I really want to re-create what I did and preserve it for the future.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

Accurate birth and death dates for my grandparents on both sides of the family.

Some leads. I'm going to check out Ancestry.com as some fellow mylifelist members have suggested.

Time to research and collect the data I discover.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Not being able to remember my grandparents' sisters' and brothers' names. I should be able to trace back to my great-grandparents, just by memory. I'm sure my mom will be able to help, as she did most of the work the first time we did this project! Hopefully she'll remember some of the pieces that I don't.

I highly suggest giving yourself the free two week trial with ancestry.com and going nuts.  Get as much as you can in those two weeks if you don't want to pay for membership.  Setting up your tree on there definitely helps.  I found that setting up my tree allowed me to gather information from other people's trees without having to do the original heavy lifting.  You get the back up information along with it to, so you aren't just taking their word for it.

familysearch.org is okay.  it's a little hit and miss.

I love this goal!  I may think about taking this one on in the future.  I am mostley curious about my fathers side of the family, as I know little about them. Great goal and good luck!

Great Goal! I want to do this too! Please keep us updated on what kinds of methods you are using! I dont' know where to start.

Haven't checked in on this goal in a while, but it just happens that my daughter, for her third-grade social studies project, has to do an ancestry board. So looks like I'll be catching up on this one sooner rather than later. Isn't it cool how you have a goal in mind for "sometime" and then life steps in and makes it a priority?

I will be sure to update what I find out! She may end up having the most intricate project of all her classmates, just because I'm so interested in re-creating what I'd done in school and lost. Should be cool to find out again where we link back to. Any advice welcome! Working Mama, have you been pursuing this recently? I'd love your direction. Jumping Crow, I'm not sure where to start either, but I am going to begin with my grandparents' names, birth and death dates, and to try to fill in all their siblings' names (which will be quite the list). I'll keep you posted! Thanks for the encouragement.
