Study Chinese
Personal Development & Community: Education

Why do you want to do this?

I speak and write Chinese, but want to do so more fluently. I plan to take a proficiency test in late February/early March 2011. I will get a bonus if I pass a higher level test. My weaker areas are reading the newspaper and listening to the news.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

Improving vocabulary through the Chinese media lessons on the Smart.fm website

Making the most of weekly language tutoring

Listening to news broadcasts, e.g through BBC World, Radio Australia and VOA

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Chinese media series put together by one of the Taiwanese universities (Taiwan Normal University?) This series of five intermediate Goals covers 1,220 common Chinese words and expressions that you need to know in order to understand Chinese newspapers and magazines. Most of the sample sentences focus on the kind of societal commentary you see in today’s press, both in style and content. Mastering these items will give you a solid foundation in written Chinese and the more formal side of spoken Chinese. This series is aimed at students who have studied Chinese for at least one year. Second-year students of Chinese at the university level should start with the first course in the series, Chinese Media: Lesson 1. Third-year students should probably jump ahead to Lesson 2 or 3.
