Sports & Adventure: Adrenaline
Why do you want to do this?
I first attempted this back in 2004 and managed to get half way before hypothermia got the better of us, so its been an unfulfilled goal ever since.
The Hawesbury Canoe Classic has been going since 1977 and now attracts 600 paddlers annually; they raise funds for bone marrow medical research, typically $250,000 p.a.
The course consists of paddling 111kms down the Hawesbury River (just outside Sydney) overnight, usually on a full moon in October
What three things will you need to make this happen?
A Kayak !!
Plenty of training - probably best done by joining a local kayaking club and having lots of smaller lead up events
Good Support Crew - a support crew are essential to keep you motivated and be there at all the checkpoints to keep you 'fed and watered'
What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?
Endurance - paddling for up to 14 hours at night and overcoming the cold
