Personal Development & Community: Self-development

Why do you want to do this?

i would like to get back in the habit of working out 5 days a week. it helps me maintain my weight and stress at work

What three things will you need to make this happen?

commitment to the challenge

watch what i eat and take in water so i can fight off the lathargec feeling

not let others get in my way and stick to my course

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

getting up in the morning and not letting others derail my challenge

Six days a week is a LOT of working out! How's this going, OReilly? Have you decided what kind of workouts you're going to do in this time frame? Do you belong to a gym or do you try different kinds of exercise every day? Inquiring minds... :)

hi Shea1916, well so far so good.  yes i do jazzercise 3-4 times a week but for this challenge i wanted to do something first thing in the morning so i have been doing Leslie Sansone Walk at home tapes.  it is so easy to talk myself out of it in the morning but i am at 3 and counting:-)

Nice work! Way to motivate! Focusing on a new habit is so important. If you make a set routine, (get up, put on your workout clothes, put the coffee on, do your workout, drink your coffee, take a shower, get to work, etc.), it will become so rote that you don't even think about it any more. Do everything you can to make that new step simple. It's also about making it a sustainable change, so I worry that six days a week is going to be too much and if you cut back, you have to promise me you won't feel like you failed or be disappointed. The idea is to create a healthy habit that makes you happy. I just read an article on weight loss in which a doctor studied people who lost weight and kept it off. He decided it's the chicken-or-egg theory. People who are happy (or do something to get happy) then lose weight and keep it off. But so many people think they have to lose weight in order to get happy. It was a very unique perspective. If I can find a link to it, I will post. Just something to think about...

I like your goal Oreilly, it helps motivate me to be more active. I'm so good at creating excuses but all it takes is a little planning, motivation, and determination. It sounds like you have all that going for you. In 21 days, it will have become a great 'habit'. I'm adding you to my list, so I can keep encouraging you!!!

Hi shea and thanks for the encouragement.  i almost always wear a pedometer daily and attempt to get 10,000 which isnt as easy as it sounds. most days it is a struggle to get 10,000 so my challenge was to do something in the morning tht would give me a 1000-1500  head start. this week i am knocked out with a winter cold/conjestion so i did make my exercise challenge but it wasnt the best.  i am a little frustrated today and yesterday because exercise it out of the question if i want to kick this cold.  but i promise not to get discouraged if i dont make my challenge this time.  i am going to continue and give it my best shot.  maybe the next 21 day challenge will be the one i complete if i dont get sick or let life get in the way.  but for this one i am still motivated:) and i love getting and giving encouragement from all of you.  take care

Thanks Leilu - I hear you on how easy it is to make an excuse not to exercise! I can fall in that hole myself and then wonder where I ever had the time to work out before:)  I love to jazzercise - I am not perfect at it and I call myself their plus size student:)  the routines change monthly and every muscle gets used so there really isnt an opportunity for boredom.  Are you participating in the 21 day challenge?  Take Care

Do not let your cold keep you back! There's still plenty of time to get moving and make it stick. Plus, like I said before, a six-day workout is intense, like as though you were training to climb a mountain. Your goal should be three-four days a week and you can vary it between jazzercise and walking, you're doing great! Don't feel like you have to fall back because you got a cold. Andrea (leading the Challenge right now) has a terrible cold too, and she is taking it easy but making strides and getting her friends to leave notes for what she should do when she gets better! That's what matters: Making habits and learning how to ask for support to get what you need. I know you can do this, OReilly. Your perspective is terrific, you just need to get more involved with your support system here and seek out others who have fitness goals. I can't wait to hear what you did this weekend to further root your new habit into your life. Bet you did  a lot. Hang tough!

Hey! Have you kicked your cold yet? I hope so, it's amazing how easily things like that can knock you out, yuck! I hope you're feeling better. I decided not to participate in the 21 day challenge because I was traveling ... hence the delay since last weekend. I will tell you though that my husband needed something to motivate him to lose weight and eat better so he and I signed up for a triathlon. Not wanting to be humiliated on the race course, we JUST started our training. It's 6 weeks away. Yikes.

Hey, how's it going?  The Challenge is over, but are you sticking with your goal?  Hope so.  Hope you'll post an update and also that you're feeling better.  I was sick after the challenge too - lost nearly three weeks and was barely holding on.  Much better these days now and back at my workout routine.  How is Jazzercise going for you?
