Fund a scholarship in Sparkys name
Personal Development & Community: Education

Why do you want to do this?

Because when I needed direction, I got it. When I needed a job, I got one. When I needed connections, I had them. When I did well, I was celebrated. When I wanted to try, I was encouraged. Sparky give me a springboard for my future before I knew who I would become or what path I would take, and I wasn't the only one who benefited. Everyone who worked in the SID office was given an incredible gift, with the hope that some day, we would be of service ourselves. I want to take what I was given and pay it back with gratitude. The best way I can think to honor this man and mentor I respect and adore is to create a scholarship in his name and award it while he is still alive to know how much I appreciate what he gave me.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

Money to fund at least one full year of school at NU.

A contact at the school who can help me put this goal into action, following all the right protocol.

A way to tell Sparky that won't embarrass him or look showy. The point is not to show off but only to let him know that even though he will retire and be gone, his legacy will live forever in those of us he inspired.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

At the moment, the barrier is money but the time will come, with hard work and savings, that this goal will be a reality. I have to work really hard to earn the money and get the scholarship in place before it's too late. He's getting old and frail, spent the month of December in the hospital. If I can't make it happen before he's gone, I will do it anyway. I just would love so much for him to be there and know it was done.

What a fitting tribute to someone who has had such an impact on your life!  This is such a great goal!  I'm not sure how much money you're hoping to raise, but have you thought about starting a non-profit to raise money?  Years ago, I started a scholarship program to get disadvantaged children into private school, as they were falling through the cracks in the public school system.  Starting a non-profit is pretty easy, and it allows you to solicit tax deductible donations.  Maybe you've already thought of this option, but  just in case you didn't, I figured I'd just throw it out there.  Fantastic goal!  Best of luck!

How very thoughtful of you!  A few years ago, I was part of raising money for a brand new scholarship, at our high school, for a classmate who died a year after we graduated.  We thought it was fitting to raise the money during our 10 year reunion.  Sadly, I don't think the money has been used towards a student yet or a plan for dispersing it.  I know a lot of people donating a lot of money.  I have raised the question a few times about when this money will start going out but haven't received a straight answer.  I go to church with the fallen classmate's parents and am sort of ashamed to look them in the eye knowing that I helped assist in funding the scholarship but nothing happened.

Thanks to you both for your input on this! After a bit of research, I realized there's already a scholarship in his name, so my goal now is just to fund a degree for a student through his scholarship. I don't know if I could manage a nonprofit on top of all my MLL work, Sassy! That's pretty ambitious, and wonderful that you went for it. WM, what a story. I wonder if you give the scholarship stewards one more chance to create a plan for the funds, then I'd head straight for the media with that story. Make something happen, girl! Don't feel bad, it was with good intentions that you participated, I'm sure.

How are you guys?? What do you think of the new site upgrades?

Shea, this is such a beautiful goal and so nice as well to read that Sparky's legacy will continue as a scholarship exists already.  How incredible to fund a degree for a student through his scholarship.  What a fortunate student that will be.  The site upgrades are awesome and I'm with you about WM's story - very sad sometimes to see how funds are mismanaged or in this case, unmanaged.  Have you let Sparky know your feelings?

What LUCK! I happened upon an event announcement honoring my mentor this September and bought my tickets. So, so thrilled to be going. There is already a scholarship in his name! So maybe my goal will be to just donate.
