Travel & Leisure: Dream Purchases

Why do you want to do this?

I want to ride again. I learned how, but now I need to get my own bike.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

Pay off debt. I don't want to make another bill without paying off my debt first.

Determine which bike I want (I already have a good idea) and how much it will cost me.

Save up the cash. I would like to pay for all (if not, half) of this purchase in cash. I want to avoid going back into debt.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

My debt and my savings

Hey, thanks so much for the kind note you left on my Life Coaching story.  I noticed your goal here.  It's great that you're practicing a bit of delayed gratification too indicating that you'd like to pay off your debt first before incurring any further debt and even save up the cash.  Way to go!  I love to read that.  What kind of bike are you thinking of?

Hi Berby... You can obtain a bike from garage sales, thrift stores; sometimes people are moving or cleaning out their 'stuff' and need to rid themselves of their bikes (especially if they are moving to a smaller home, etc.)...If you need inspiration for this one, let me know; I am a rider as well, but of horses !! :) You can do it!

Hi Aundrea,

You're welcome. I'm still trying to learn the whole delayed gratification thing, but this is after I made a mess of my finances in undergrad... A tough lesson learned. I love the 2009 V Star Silverado. It has a small enough engine as to keep from getting away from me when I start riding again.

Hi Gina,

That’s very good advice; thank you. I will definitely check out some of the different sales once I save up some cash. I’m thinking that the cash in hand may save me a bit on the final cost. Inspiration is always welcome. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t mind learning to ride a horse either… I may need to add that to my list.

Awesome.  I just looked that up.  Very sweet ride.  I can't wait to read your success story and see the picture of the one you find for yourself.  Have you ridden one yet?  Is there a place you can go to test drive it at all?

Awww... thanks! I haven't ridden one and I don't even know where to start at this point. I had a friend tell me to check with other dealers to see if someone might trade one in. There is a dealer that sells V Stars about 20 minutes from where I live, so I am going to check with them as well.

Good idea.  You don't need to be ready to buy just to try.  Test driving for fun may just motivate you to focus on achieving this goal and find creative ways to get that debt reduced.  Let us know once you go for sure.

I know in California, the Highway Patrol puts on a weekend program for around $250 that includes the bike rental and intrustion. Over 2 days, you complete all of the skills and written tests and at the end of the weekend, you have your motorcycle license. They may have a similar program near you - it's worth looking.

Hi Sacrutcher,

They do have that program here. There are usually available at the area community colleges.
